Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

WHAT IS POLYCYSTIC OVARY?

Polycystic ovary syndrome is an ovulation problem that can be seen in one in every 10 women. This syndrome is a hormonal disorder that negatively affects fertility and predisposes to many diseases. In a normal ovary, an egg suitable for fertilization develops during menstruation, but in most patients with polycystic ovary syndrome, ovaries that are not capable of fertilization are seen as numerous sacs on ultrasound. This ovulation disorder can cause menstrual irregularities, missed periods or long intermittent periods and infertility. In polycystic ovary syndrome, symptoms such as skin acne, oiliness, hair loss and hair growth may occur due to an increase in hormones called androgens in the blood.

SYMPTOMS OF POLYCYSTIC OVARY

The number and severity of symptoms seen in individuals with polycystic ovary syndrome vary from person to person.  However, menstrual irregularity is the most common symptom.

CAUSES OF POLYCYSTIC OVARY

Despite numerous clinical studies, the exact cause of polycystic ovary syndrome is not known, but it is known that genetic and environmental factors may be effective. Individuals with a family history of this syndrome are more likely to develop this disease. We also know that obesity triggers this syndrome. In other words, overweight causes insulin resistance and insulin resistance triggers polycystic ovary syndrome.

POLYCYSTIC OVARY TREATMENT METHODS

The treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome should be planned individually by endocrine, gynecology and obstetrics doctors. A treatment aimed at reducing the level of androgen hormone in the bloodstream, which is above normal, should be applied. Then, with the polycystic ovary syndrome diet prescribed by the dietitian, the person should be ensured to reach her/his ideal weight. In this way, insulin resistance decreases and the course of the disease improves.

Excess androgens in the blood can also cause dermatologic problems such as hair loss, hair growth and oily skin. Therefore, the patient should receive a comprehensive treatment.

A laparoscopic (closed) surgical intervention can also be performed on the ovaries to eliminate ovulation problems.

As with any disease, early diagnosis and treatment is very important. If you are suffering from PCOS or if you suspect this disease, you should consult your doctor and have the necessary tests done and you can improve your quality of life by starting your treatment process.
