Hymen Examination
The Latin name of the hymen, which is accepted as a symbol of virginity in societies, is “hymen”. In fact, although there is no obligation such as bleeding in the first intercourse, in parallel with the changes in society, it has caused psychological trauma in our young girls in recent years, causing domestic violence, honor killings and even suicides.
The hymen examination is performed by the gynecologist in the lithotomy position. While the patient is lying on her back and her legs are open, the labium minus (small lips) are opened and the examination is performed.
If the hymen is further inside, the physician can aim to see the hymen by asking the patient to push. The average duration of the examination is 3-4 minutes. It does not hurt the patient and there is no possibility of the membrane being damaged during the examination.
